Dog mauled, possibly involved in dog-fight
Tucson, AZ (US)

Incident Date: Saturday, Jan 3, 2004
County: Pima

Disposition: Open

Suspect(s) Unknown - We need your help!

Investigators with the Pima County Sheriff's Department (PCSD) are requesting public assistance in locating information and suspects related to the mauling of a Labrador-mix dog named "Blackie." Detectives theorize that "Blackie" may have been the victim of a "walk-by dog fight" a fight characterized by the release of an aggressive animal into the yard as a means of preparing it for organized dog fights. PCSD stated that the theft of two bicycles and an attempted burglary of the home was also reported and may have occurred at the same time as the dog mauling. "Blackie's" owners were out of town at the time of the attack.

Investigators believe that the crime took place on January 3rd or January 4th, 2004. "Blackie's" owners reported the dog's injuries to PCSD on the evening of January 5th after they returned from vacation. The dog was transported for emergency medical care by PCSD deputies. Veterinarians subsequently amputated both of the dog's ears and performed massive reconstructive surgery. The dog is currently being cared for by the Humane Society of Southern Arizona (HSSA) and may have to undergo additionally surgery and an extended recuperation period.

"Blackie's" residence is in the 7900 block of South Caballo, Tucson, near the intersection of Los Reales and Camino de Oeste.

The Animal Cruelty Taskforce is asking members of the public who may have information about this crime to contact 88-CRIME (883-7463), an anonymous tip-line run by the Pima County Attorney's Office.
