An 11-year-old girl was charged with two felonies Monday for allegedly killing a 13-week-old puppy, police said.
The girl, whose name was not released because she is being prosecuted as a juvenile, was charged with aggravated animal cruelty and second-degree criminal mischief after an investigation by State Police.
She was accused of repeatedly slamming the small puppy, a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, against a floor and bed post until it was dead. The incident was reported to State Police on Sunday night.
Authorities said the girl, who lives in Saratoga Springs, was visiting the Lake George home where the dog was killed and was upset that the person who was watching her at the time -- the dog's owner -- would not allow her to do something she wanted to do.
The criminal mischief charge relates to the dog because it was considered the victim's personal property and had a value of $1,500.
The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is a small breed, with adults generally topping out at under 20 pounds.
The girl was released to a care giver pending referral of the case to the Warren County Probation Department. The Probation Department could put her in a diversion program or opt to have the case prosecuted in Warren County Family Court.
State Police referred comment on the case to the Warren County Attorney's Office, which prosecutes juvenile crime.
Assistant Warren County Attorney Amy Bartlett said Tuesday afternoon she could not discuss the case.
