Alleged: Francisco Castellano
A 46-year-old New Britain man pleaded not guilty Thursday in Superior Court to charges that he violently raped and terrorized a young girl over four months last year and sexually abused a girl in 2004.
Francisco Castellano threatened the victims, threw cans of food at them and hurt their pets, according to an arrest warrant.
Castellano is in custody with bail set at $100,000. He is scheduled to return to court on July 5.
He is charged with two counts each of first-degree sexual assault, illegal sexual contact, second-degree unlawful restraint, three counts of risk of injury to a minor and one count each of cruelty to animals and intentional cruelty to persons.
In the 2004 case, he faces two counts each of fourth-degree sexual assault and illegal sexual contact.
In the more recent case, Castellano is suspected of raping a 14-year-old girl about 10 times between August and December of 2011. He would pin her down on his bed during the assaults, leaving "fingerprint bruises" on her arm.
After the first assault, he taunted her about no longer being a virgin, the warrant says.
In addition to sexually assaulting the girl, Castellano would grab her hair, throw cans of food at her and kicked her pet dog several times when it tried to protect her.
The dog, a small poodle and Chihuahua mix, barked and sometimes bit Castellano when the victim tried fighting Castellano off. Castellano kicked the dog or would throw it across the living room by its legs, the warrants says.
The girl was fearful of Castellano, who threatened to kill her if she told anyone, and she kept the abuse to herself. The abuse affected her so much that she once had an asthma attack while arguing with him, according to an arrest warrant.
"I never even knew that I had asthma," she told investigators.
She confided in an older sister a few days before Christmas and the two planned on speaking with a social worker. But a third sister learned of the abuse and called the police, who contacted the victim.
As police investigated, they discovered three more victims, including the victim in the 2004 case. The victims described how Castellano grabbed and touched their bodies as young girls and ripped their clothes.
One of them said he broke her pinky finger when he refused to have sex with him. Another said he threatened her family a gun, the warrant says. He also ripped the head of a kitten in front of one of the victims and her family, the warrant says.
Except for the case from 2004, most of those abuses happened in Mexico.
New Britain police had investigated two domestic complaints involving Castellano in Sept. of 2009. He was convicted that year of first-degree assault and second-degree threatening.
