County: Iberia

Disposition: Alleged

Alleged: Tora Nevada Benoit

Sheriff Louis Ackal advises that Detectives with the Iberia Parish Sheriff's Office Bureau of Investigations arrested Tora Benoit (DOB 11/14/1971 of 913 Ann St., New Iberia) on 48 counts of animal cruelty.

Deputies responded to the 2700 Block of Jefferson Terrace Boulevard, Iberia Parish, in reference to complaints filed by citizens of a foul odor in the area. Once Deputies arrived, they observed animals being forced to live in atrocious circumstances.

In all, 24 dogs and 22 pigs were being kept on the property without food or water. Detectives obtained a search warrant for the property and also located the carcass of a pig that had died as a result of its living conditions.

According to Detectives the animals were malnourished and did not have proper shelter. Animal control seized the 24 dogs and brought them to the Parish Animal Shelter. The pigs were also taken from the property by the Iberia Parish Constable.

Benoit was charged with forty-six counts of simple animal cruelty and two counts of aggravated cruelty to animals. Benoit was then booked into the Iberia Parish Jail.
