A woman from Eielson Air Force Base is accused of leaving two long-haired chihuahuas to die in a Fairbanks motel room, according to Assistant District Attorney Andrew Baldock.
Ashley Elizabeth Lazare, 21, faces two charges of cruelty to animals.
On Dec. 7, a cleaning crew entered a room at Alaska Motor Inn because of a bad smell and found the dead dogs, according to a criminal complaint against Lazare. The dogs had been Lazare's pets, the complaint stated. Observation of the dogs and a necropsy concluded they died from malnutrition and neglect.
Court summons for Lazare were requested in the charging document, which was filed Monday. Lazare's last known address is on Eielson Air Force Base, Baldock said.
Cruelty to animals is a Class A misdemeanor. Each count is punishable like a driving under the influence conviction, with a maximum of one year in jail and a $10,000 fine.

A woman who left two long-haired Chihuahuas to die in a hotel room in December was sentenced earlier this week in Fairbanks District Court.
Ashley Lazare, 22, pleaded guilty to one count of cruelty to animals, a class A misdemeanor, and was sentenced Wednesday to 120 days imprisonment with 120 days suspended. She was placed on probation for a period of two years, during which time she is prohibited from owning, possessing, or having custody of any animals. She must also pay a $1,000 fine to an animal rescue program and perform 40 hours of community service.
Hotel staff investigating a bad smell in a room Lazare had rented found the two dogs Dec. 7 and alerted authorities. According to Assistant District Attorney Anthony Baldock, necropsies revealed both animals died from neglect, dehydration and starvation.
"Now that Ms. Lazare has been convicted of animal cruelty, should she ever negligently cause the death or severe pain or prolonged suffering to any animal in the future, the law permits her to be charged with a class C felony," Baldock said.
Lazare told an acquaintance that she had given the dogs to a friend and that she thought the friend had picked them up, Baldock said. |
