A Laurel County woman is behind bars facing animal cruelty charges after police say she left her dogs in a hot car while she went shopping for more than an hour, causing one of the dogs to die.

London Police were called to the Walmart Supercenter on Highway 192 around 3:30 p.m. Friday. When officers arrived, they said one of the dogs was dead and they were able to rescue another one.

The dogs' owner, Kimberly Dowell, 28, was arrested. When confronted, police said she told them she went into Walmart to get groceries and was inside for an hour and a half.

According to police, three of the car's four windows were cracked slightly and there was no sign of any water for the two dogs inside.

Temperatures in London on Friday afternoon were in the 80s.

"I just want folks to understand that it's important that you don't leave your animals inside the vehicle during a hot day like this," said Sgt. Travis Hurley with the London Police Department. "It's even hotter inside the car than it is outside, so it's very dangerous."

Dowell faces two counts of animal cruelty. She is set to appear in court Monday morning.
