William "Joe" Jenkins got that this week when the 18-year-old Mansfield man received the maximum sentence for setting fire to a girl's 3-year-old terrier in July. The dog died the next day. Richland County Common Pleas Judge James DeWeese gave Jenkins the maximum 18-month sentence on the felony arson charge and the maximum 90 days on the misdemeanor cruelty charge. By law, the misdemeanor will be served at the same time as the felony, making the total sentence 18 months.
DeWeese called it "the worst form of this offense that I have ever seen."
Jenkins did not show any remorse for his actions, a telltale sign he is a disturbed individual.
"He was smiling and laughing when he was telling of torturing animals," DeWeese said. "There is something seriously wrong when you would take pleasure out of torturing innocent and defenseless animals."
Jenkins asked DeWeese for a second chance, but didn't get one.
DeWeese cited Jenkins' extensive juvenile record, which includes aggravated arson, a sex crime against a 3-year-old girl, assault, having a weapon at school, breaking and entering, receiving stolen property, inducing panic, theft and possession of marijuana. References« Back to Search Results
