County: Kiowa

Disposition: Alleged

Alleged: Jordan Lee Batsell

A Greensburg man has been arrested and charged with animal cruelty in the death of a pair of animals.

Jordan Lee Batsell of Greensburg has been charged by the Kiowa County Attorney's Office with three counts of animal cruelty and one count of burglary.

Batsell made his first appearance in Kiowa County District court on Thursday asking Magistrate Judge Ann L. Dixson for a court appointed attorney.

Dixson appointed Larned attorney Mark Cowell to represent Batsell during his next appearance on March 29, when he is expected to enter a plea.

Three official offense reports released by the Kiowa County Sheriff's office allege Batsell was involved in separate crimes that occurred between Dec. 1, 2011 and Feb. 29. of this year. He is considered innocent of the charges unless proven guilty.

In one report filed on March 2, 2012, an employee of the Iroquois Center for Human Development reported to Sheriff Kendal Lothman that the suspect killed a cat inside his 205 E. Nebraska apartment sometime between Dec. 1, 2011 and Dec. 31, 2011.

A second report filed by Lothman on March 7, 2012, on which he is listed as the reporting officer and the reporting party, describes an incident that took place sometime between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. on Feb. 29. Lothman alleges Batsell strangled a dog inside of his apartment, that he was unsuccessful in killing the animal, but caused it injury.

A third report filed by Lothman on March 2, 2012, which lists two employees of the Iroquois Center as the "reporting party" and "discovered crime", alleges that Batsell broke into a vacant garage one block from his home on Nebraska Ave. and killed a dog with a knife. The report also states that Sgt. Zane Huffman collected weapons and photos.

Batsell is currently being held in the Kiowa County jail on a $25,000 bond and will be back in court on March 29 and 1:30 p.m. for a preliminary hearing.
