When she closes her eyes Ros O'Callaghan hears the terrified screams of her beloved poodle Georgie as her neighbor cut into her dog's neck with a large carving knife at Hope Harbor on the weekend.

Without the brave actions of harbormaster Mike Davis, 55, Ms O'Callaghan fears she would be dead as well.

The macabre events of Saturday morning left Mr Davis in hospital, stabbed in the stomach, a dog decapitated, a man in the watch-house facing a string of charges, and the tight-knit harbor community in shock.

Ms O'Callaghan said she was too traumatised to return to the houseboat at Hope Island where she had lived for the past five months.

"I can't go back down to the boat. I think we'll just sell it. You can wash blood away but not what happened," she said.

Ms O'Callaghan said she was taking out the rubbish with the help of Mr Davis when three-year-old Georgie ran down the pier and around the corner.

"I heard this blood-curdling scream," she said. "I ran around the corner and saw him trying to cut my dog's head off."

She said Mr Davis then charged at the knife-wielding man, giving her and Georgie the time to run back to the houseboat.

But their ordeal was not over.

She said the man came around the corner, still holding the knife.

She threw Georgie into the water and jumped in herself to try to get away.

"He went and grabbed Georgie out of the water. He continued to cut her head right off," she said.

"I thought he was going to jump in and I was going to die."

But she said an assistant harbormaster called out, challenging the crazed man to come after him instead.

Then Mr Davis, suffering from a stab wound, jumped into the water to pull her out.

"He's a hero. He saved my life," she said.

"He's just a brilliant guy on the marina. Everyone loves him. He could have been killed quite easily."

Mr Davis last night remained in Gold Coast Hospital in a stable condition but with serious injuries.

Ms O'Callaghan's partner Bob Coventon, who was away at the time, said the harbormaster deserved a bravery award for his actions.

The incident lasted about 30 minutes before police arrived on the scene.

Ms O'Callaghan said Georgie had been the daughter she had never had.

"Our little baby. I won't be able to get another dog," she said.

"She just gave us so much joy. I miss her smell, I miss her being around."

She said the terrifying event had come out of the blue and she had not argued with her alleged attacker before the incident.

It is understood the man's wife and child left him the previous day.

The 42-year-old Gold Coast man is due to appear in Southport Magistrates Court today charged with attempted murder, acts intending to cause grievous bodily harm, going armed as to cause fear, assault occasioning bodily harm, possession of a knife, animal cruelty and injuring animals.
