Kitten set on fire
Fairmont, NC (US)

Incident Date: Wednesday, Dec 17, 2003
County: Robeson

Disposition: Open

Suspect(s) Unknown - We need your help!

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals is offering a $2,500 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of teenagers who allegedly set a stray kitten on fire last month.

The kitten was burned Dec. 17, 2003 in front of a supermarket in Fairmont. Marlena Oxendine, 18, said she saw several teenagers burning the kitten with a fireplace lighter as they rode in a car. She said the teens then flung the cat out of the car.

Her mother, Helen Oxendine, rushed the injured 2-month-old kitten to Southeastern Veterinary Hospital in Lumberton. The kitten, which they called Miracle, suffered severe burns on its legs and stomach. One leg had to be amputated.

PETA announced the reward Friday, January 2, 2004, saying that other animals could be endangered by the teenagers.

"Someone will come forward," Helen Oxendine said. "It's a shame that money has to be offered before someone will do it. But, maybe now we can get to the bottom of this."

Miracle is expected to be released to the Oxendines on Monday. Ms. Oxendine said she has received donations to help pay for Miracle's medical bills.

Authorities have said the teenagers would be charged with a felony for malicious and intentional cruelty toward an animal if they are found.
