A Blanchard couple have been charged in McClain County District Court with one count each of animal cruelty after sheriff's deputies found three horses on their property in poor health.
Darrell Thompson, 55, and Mary Thompson, 54, are accused of neglecting the animals. Both entered not guilty pleas to the charges in a court appearance Friday.
According to the sheriff's office, deputies responded to a report of animal abuse Nov. 9 in the 16000 block of 230th Street. Deputies said they found a pasture full of weeds and no grass.
According to a court affidavit, Darrell Thompson said the horses belonged to his wife. The couple agreed to sign the horses over to a local horse rescue operation.
Deputies said a veterinarian determined one of the horses was not going to survive and needed to be euthanized. The other two horses are recovering, they said.
Darrell and Mary Thompson each were released on $3,000 bail. Preliminary hearing for the couple is set for 9 a.m. on March 28, 2012.
