County: Forsyth

Charges: Felony CTA

Alleged: Chad Everette Viars

A Winston-Salem man has been arrested after the family dog was found dead in a pond.

Chad Everette Viars, 38, was charged with felony animal cruelty after an incident near his home Wednesday night.

Forsyth County Animal Control officials said a bulldog's body was found Wednesday night in a pond on Smith Lake Road, not too far from his home.

Officers also found a lot of blood near the pond, animal control officials said.

Animal control officials do not yet know if the dog was beaten or stabbed. A necropsy is being conducted to see if the dog died before being thrown in the pond or drowned.

Viars was placed in the Forsyth County Detention Center under a $3,500 secured bond. He is scheduled to appear in court on Friday.

Viars has a long criminal record, which includes assault, kidnapping and indecent liberties with a child.
