Wolf hybrid kept without shelter
Newark, OH (US)

Incident Date: Thursday, Jan 19, 2012
County: Licking

Disposition: Not Charged

Abuser names unreleased

Licking County Animal Control located and captured an escaped wolf hybrid on the 400 block of New Haven Avenue shortly before 1 p.m.

The animal, a cross between a domestic dog and a wolf, broke its chain and escaped from its residence on Oakwood Avenue about 9 p.m. Thursday. It was last seen near the Ohio 16-Ohio 79 overpass (on the east side) headed north, Newark police Sgt. Scott Snow said.

The missing animal was reported to officers at 9:30 a.m. Friday. Police are unaware how aggressive the animal is, but it is an exotic animal, according to the news release.

Newark police received a report of possible animal cruelty Tuesday after someone saw the animal outside without shelter. When police investigated, they found that the animal was a wolf hybrid, which is not permitted in Newark, Snow said.

Animal control told the owner on Tuesday to remove the animal, but it was back in the city Thursday night, Snow said.

Area schools were alerted and asked to keep children inside, according to the news release.
