Cat shot with arrow
Galion, OH (US)

Incident Date: Friday, Dec 23, 2011
County: Crawford

Charges: Misdemeanor
Disposition: Alleged
Case Images: 1 files available

Alleged: 14 year old juvenile

A 14 year old juvenile has admitted to shooting a cat with an arrow, according to Galion Police.

Galion police officer Ralph Burwell said the juvenile who surrendered does not have any previous record.

"There are being two charges sent up to the judge, but neither have been filed (yet)," Burwell said.

The first is a second degree misdemeanor for cruelty to animals and the second is a fourth degree misdemeanor for discharging a firearm within the city.

"We have never heard of any other cases like this, and the juvenile did not confess to anything else," Burwell said when asked if the juvenile was being charged with other crimes.

Yet Crawford County Humane Society Agent Angela Chandler said this is the fifth call about a cat shot with an arrow she has received in Galion since July.

Chandler said she received a call from the Galion Police Department at 11:30 p.m. Dec. 23.

"A gentleman had called and said his two dogs had chased the cat onto his back porch," Chandler said. "He saw that the cat had an arrow through her head, so he ... reported it immediately."

Chandler picked up the cat and made arrangements for emergency surgery for the female feline that was otherwise in good condition.

"She appears to be well taken care of, so we think she is someone's pet," Chandler said. "Dr. Matt Glass at Horizon Animal Hospital in Galion was able to remove the arrow that had gone in just under her lower jawbone and came out between her upper jawbone and her cheekbone. Luckily, she didn't even have a broken jaw."

Things are looking up for the tabby, now known throughout the state as Arrow Eve. According to Brenda Mack, an animal health technician at Horizon, Arrow Eve is doing much better.

"She is now eating canned cat food on her own and is in a much better mood. At first, she would cower and hiss, but now she is more trusting of us. She is definitely feeling much better," Mack said.

Victoria Hartschuh of the Humane Society said Arrow Eve is due to be released from hospital care the early part of next week.

Arrow Eve's surgery cost the Humane Society around $300. Anyone wishing to donate can visit the agency's website at www.crawfordhumane.com or send donations to Crawford County Humane Society, 3590 Ohio 98, Bucyrus, Ohio, 44820.
