Puppy's throat slit-euthanized
Grand Ridge, FL (US)

Incident Date: Monday, Dec 19, 2011
County: Jackson

Disposition: Alleged

Alleged: Jerald Randal Land

A Grand Ridge man was charged with animal cruelty after allegedly cutting the throat of a dog that belonged to his girlfriend, and which had to be euthanized because of the severity of the injuries, according to authorities.

In the complaint filed against Jerald Randal Land, 28, investigators wrote that authorities had been alerted on Dec. 19, that Land and his girlfriend were on their way to a hospital because he had cut his hand, and that the two had been in a verbal altercation. An officer pulled over the truck Land was driving, and saw that his hand was bleeding. An ambulance was summoned, and the officer spoke with the girlfriend while Land was being treated by emergency crews.

The woman talked to the officer about the argument between herself and Land. She said that Land had "stated that he would never hurt her but would do the next best thing," according to the complaint. She said, "Jerald then picked her bulldog puppy up and cut its throat with a knife." The officer went to the residence where the altercation had allegedly occurred, and found the puppy alive but bleeding from the neck.

"It was apparent that the dog's neck had been cut by some type of knife," the officer wrote in his report. "Animal control was called to the scene to render aid to the animal. The animal control officer determined "that the dog's neck was cut too bad and had to be put down," the officer wrote.

Land was arrested and taken to the Jackson County jail. His bond was set at $25,000 and he remained in the facility as of early Wednesday morning.
