A city police officer jumped atop a chain-link fence Thursday afternoon to cut down a dead cat dangling from a tree by an electronic wire.

Residents of a home in the 200 block of South Seventh Street told police that the animal had been hanging from the tree limb for at least three days. Police officers summoned the city's animal control officer, who in turn alerted the Cumberland County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

Investigators admitted they had little information as to how the cat ended up in the tree. It was found in a public area at the edge of a communal parking lot behind the home.

The cat was obviously dead for some time, even before it had been strung from the tree limb. Decay made it difficult to determine its fur color or breed. Its tail was missing, a sign that the cat may have suffered a violent death, an investigator said.

The animal's hind leg was tied to the limb with an electronic cord used for plugging something into a car's cigarette lighter.

The SPCA is turning to the public for help. Anyone with information about the cat is asked to call the agency at 691-1500.
