Mare and colt found severely malnourished
Virginia Beach, VA (US)

Incident Date: Sunday, Nov 6, 2011
County: Virginia Beach City

Disposition: Alleged
Case Images: 1 files available

Alleged: Mary Bodner-Dufresne

Mary Bodner-Dufresne, 44, of the 900 block of Princess Anne Road in Virginia Beach has been charged with two counts of Animal Cruelty.

The Virginia Beach Animal Control Unit received a complaint that horses were not properly being cared for in the Creeds section of the City.

An Animal Control Officer found horses that were indeed being neglected. Two of six horses, a mare and her colt, were severely malnourished. One of these two, a young colt, also had a significant leg wound that interfered with his gait and was festering.

There were also over 15 chickens and gees in a coop, 6 horses, several goats and cats on the property.

All of these animals lived in partially muddy, grassless conditions. The fence was in severe disrepair and the gate did not work.

The two horses have been removed and the other animals were able to remain on the farm

Defresne is also currently in the process of having two of the other horses placed on other farms.

Defresne will appear in court on December 12, 2011.

The case remains under investigation.
