Dog beaten, leg broken
Provo, UT (US)

Incident Date: Tuesday, Oct 25, 2011
County: Utah

Disposition: Alleged

Alleged: Lorenzo Bokanga

Police say a dog is recovering after a neighbor was seen beating the animal.

According to Provo Police Sgt. Matthew Siufanua, animal control officers responded to an animal cruelty call at 782 West 1850 North on Tuesday.

Siufanua said that when the officers arrived, they found a dog by the name of Star injured and battered.

Officers say Star's ownerr stated she went looking for her dog in the back yard, only to discover that the dog had run to her neighbor's back yard.

Siufanua said the owner observed her neighbor, Lorenzo Bokanga, beating Star.

As a result of the beating, Siufanua said that officers found Star had suffered a broken elbow.

After an investigation, Siufanua said that Lorenzo Bokanga was cited and released for animal cruelty.

Siufanua said that Star's injuries required medical attention, and that she was taken to Park Animal Hospital in Provo for treatment, where Dr. Tara Erickson from the clinic determined that surgery was necessary.

Star's owners were unable to pay for the necessary treatment, so Dr. Erickson decided to adopt Star and rename her Utah, according to Siufanua.

Surgery was conducted yesterday on Utah's elbow, and Siufanua said that Dr. Erickson found a new home for her.
