Alleged: Robert Ryan
City officials condemned a dilapidated Roxbury home and arrested one of the tenants on gun charges after a search of the propery found 10 pit bulls guarding a trash bag full of pot. All the dogs were removed by animal control.
Police went to the home at 76 Perrin St. to serve an arrest warrant on Robert Ryan after he allegedly fired 5 shots at 4 people, wounding one in the leg and another in the arm. Thats when the dog fighting den was discovered.
The Inspectional Services Department was called after a search of the trash-strewn house found 4 adult pit bulls chained to masonry blocks in the basement. 6 more pit bull pups in cages were found on the 1st floor along with a large trash bag wtih an undeterimed amount of marijuana.
Ryan plead not guilty in court at his arraignment on 1/5/03. Officials are hoping the public will help them build a case of animal cruelty against Ryan. The dogs were found starving, with battle-scars in the dark, dank basement along with a canine combat arena.
The dogs were not the only danger authorities removed from the ramshackled house. Also confiscated were a stun gun, BB gun and large-capacity firearm magazine clips. The house had motorcycles and lawn mowers parked in some of the rooms.
The adult dogs had leather collars wrapped very tightly around their necks and the chains were too heavy and too short. The basement had no light, nor did the dog have fresh air.
7 people, including 2 girls, 4 and 5 years old and a bedridden 86-year-old woman, were living in squalor with the dogs, a cat and 3 Amazonian Pacu fish (which grow up to 30 inches long).
