Defendant/Suspect: Mario Romero Barillas
Mario Romero Barillas, 38, was arrested in a case involving cockfighting.
Washington Humane Society officers were investigating a rooster found at a home at the 1600 block of Montello Street in Northeast on December 1. The officers found that the rooster's spurs had been sharpened to a point, a trait often found in roosters involved in cockfighting, which prompted an investigation. Barillas admitted to using the animal for cockfighting.
Barillas, who was in the country illegally, pled guilty to attempted engaging in animal fighting and will serve five years in federal detention before being deported back to Guatemala.
