One man was arrested after three dogs rescued from an apartment complex in east Charlotte were found with "injuries consistent with dog fighting," according Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department.

Police were notified of the alleged dog fighting in the 1700 block of Eastcrest Drive on Sunday around 11 p.m.

According to the report filed with CMPD, Animal Control took three injured pit bulls to veterinarians for further evaluation.

Officers also seized a "break stick," a tool generally used to separate animals in dog fights, police said.

Alphonso Sturdivant, 29, was arrested on a warrant Monday and charged with felony Dog Fighting - Own, Possess, Train Dog.

Sturdivant was placed in the Mecklenburg County Jail under a $5,000 secured bond.

According to the report, there were several suspects involved in the alleged dog fighting.

Sturdivant has been arrested three times over the past three years on various gun, drug and DWI charges.
