A man who admitted animal cruelty charges which led to the deaths of four greyhounds blamed depression caused by personal problems.

Grantham magistrates heard how RSPCA officers found four underweight dead dogs covered in urine and feces in the former home of Martin Carr and Dawn Campbell, in Harlaxton Road, Grantham, in March. Two live dogs were also found, both also having been neglected. The dogs were discovered along with seven puppies.

The court heard how the dogs were left in pens in a padlocked garage with no natural light or ventilation, nor food and water. Solicitor Beris Brickles told magistrates the dogs had been suffering in appalling conditions for three weeks.

Carr, 27, had admitted 10 charges of causing unnecessary suffering to the animals at a previous court hearing, reappearing on Wednesday for sentencing.

He was handed a 90-day suspended sentence, banned from keeping animals for at least five years, and ordered to carry out 100 hours' unpaid work and pay £150 costs.

His heavily pregnant partner Campbell, 31, admitted on Wednesday a charge of causing unnecessary suffering to an animal and of neglecting to ensure an animal's welfare. She also blamed personal problems for the neglect.

Campbell was given 12 months' conditional discharge and also banned from keeping animals for a minimum of five years.

The pair now live in Park Way, Whitwell, Worksop.

RSPCA chief inspector Rob Mellooy told the Journal he was happy the pair were handed a ban on keeping animals.

He added: "Custodial sentences and fines are punishment, but to stop people from keeping animals stops the problem from repeating itself."
