A Cooperstown man was charged with animal cruelty after state police accused him of shooting his neighbor's dog Thursday.

Police charged Jeffrey Bennett Jr., 20, in the incident.

The shooting happened at 5:43 p.m. in the 500 block of Myers Hill Road in Jackson Township, Venango County.

Police said Bennett shot a dog owned by Jack Greenlee Jr., 27, of Cooperstown.

Greenlee had shot Bennett's dog. Both dogs died, police said.

Police said Bennett's unleashed dog wandered onto Greenlee's property and killed several chickens.

Greenlee shot the dog after it became aggressive toward him, police said.

Police said Greenlee attempted to apologize to Bennett for shooting his dog but was told to go away.

Bennett then entered Greenlee's property and shot Greenlee's leashed dog, police said.
