A garage on M-88 in Bellaire typically is used to store vehicles and other equipment for Antrim County Animal Control.
On Tuesday, the garage looked more like Old MacDonald's Farm. About 60 rabbits and a couple of chickens were scattered about the building. They ranged in size and color, but all of them came from the same Elmira property.
"I have an Animal Control garage full of rabbits now," Antrim County Sheriff Dan Bean said.
Authorities believe the animals' owner, Michael T. Peters, neglected his rabbits and chickens, along with a few horses. Antrim County prosecutors this week charged Peters, 34, with a felony count of abandonment and/or cruelty to 10 or more animals, some of which authorities said were malnourished.
Prosecutors last week also charged Peters' girlfriend, Shonda E. Scott, 29, of East Jordan, with a misdemeanor count of abandonment and/or cruelty to two or three animals. References |
