Dog beaten to death
Candler, NC (US)

Incident Date: Saturday, Sep 10, 2011
County: Buncombe

Disposition: Alleged

Alleged: Kristopher Lee Stroupe

A Candler man was charged with animal cruelty for killing a dog that suffered "extensive cranial trauma," according to investigators.

Kristopher Lee Stroupe, 34, Chilton Drive, Candler, was charged with animal cruelty, according to an arrest warrant.

Authorities were contacted by Mission Hospital officials after the man showed up there with a dog bite.

The 20-pound, mixed breed dog named Bandit was a family pet, said Lt. Kevin Calhoun, director of Buncombe County animal services.

"This animal had been part of the family only for a couple of months," Calhoun said.

Stroupe told authorities that the dog bit him when he attempted to feed the dog, and that he killed the animal in self defense, Calhoun said.

But authorities allege evidence did not support Stroupe's account.

A necropsy determined the dog died from extensive cranial trauma.
