Case Updates

Authorities have removed additional animals from the home of a man who was discovered here last week with a number of dead cats in his freezer, along with a cache of unlawful weapons and an expired visa.

A second search of the home of Ian Barlow, 45, of Three Bridges Road, resulted in the removal of an additional 26 live animals from the home " including two exotic animals, according to the New Jersey Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

The society, working with the Salem County Prosecutor's Office and state police, conducted an initial investigation of Barlow's home on Sept. 13 after they discovered disturbing Facebook posts Barlow had made about his inability to take care of his animals, society officials said.

That search resulted in the discovery of 17 dead cats in Barlow's freezer, 5 very sick cats, and a number of unlawful weapons, according to authorities.

Approximately 26 live animals were removed from the home following a second search, authorities said Monday.

There have now been a total of 31 live animals removed from Barlow's home: 29 cats, and one olingo and one ring tailed cat (both exotic animals), according to authorities.

The cats were removed by the NJSPCA, and the two exotic animals were removed by the New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife.

According to Salem County Prosecutor John T. Lenahan, Barlow is in the country illegally from Great Britain on an expired visa and is being held in the Salem County Correctional Facility pending a hearing in federal immigration court for deportation.

He has also been charged with various unlawful possession of weapons charges (for a handgun, rifle or shotgun, assault firearm, and a large-capacity ammunition magazine), as well as criminal simulation, said Lenahan.

An additional charge for possessing a firearm as an illegal alien has also been added, the prosecutor said Monday.

The cause of death of the cats found in Barlow's freezer is also being investigated, and animal cruelty charges could be pending, NJSPCA officials said.

The cats were found neatly packaged in bags in the freezer, and the cause of their death is still unknown.

There could also be pending charges for the two exotic animals found in Barlow's home, officials said.
