An animal humane investigator is preparing a report after finding four dead kittens and their injured mother Wednesday night in a Streator Dumpster.

The Streator-based investigator, Peggy Rizzo, said she received a call to go to Del Monte Trailer Court at Streator's northern edge, where a man was reported to be killing cats. After arriving at the scene, Rizzo - joined by La Salle County Animal Control Officer Gary Wind - found four dead kittens in a sandwich bag stuffed inside another bag.

Rizzo said she then found the mother cat in a plastic bag tied shut with a vacuum nozzle sticking into the bag - she said in response to questioning, the man suspected of killing the cats said the bag was rigged up to attach to a car's exhaust. The mother was still alive, but with blood on her nose. This cat was taken to a veterinarian; from there the cat is to go to the Pet Project animal shelter, where it can be adopted.

"It's a small, black-and-white cat with huge eyes. It's very pretty," Rizzo noted.

All the cats were covered with fleas. Rizzo said she handled one of the kittens, with the inside of the head feeling and sounding as if it contained pea gravel, because of the pulverized bones - it was apparently hit on the head. Rizzo estimated the kittens were about one week old.

Rizzo said a report will be submitted to the La Salle County State's Attorney's Office for possible prosecution. Rizzo said she hopes a charge of aggravated cruelty to an animal will be filed.
