Dog decapitated after dog-fight
Chicago, IL (US)

Incident Date: Monday, Aug 29, 2011
County: Cook

Charges: Misdemeanor, Felony CTA
Disposition: Alleged

Alleged:
» 16 year old male
» Derrick Hargrett

A 16-year-old boy allegedly chopped the head off a dog and tried to pull a tooth out of its head last week on the West Side after a dogfight, police said.

The boy and a 24-year-old man who owned the dog have been charged with multiple counts of animal cruelty in connection with incident.

Police responded about 6:20 p.m. Monday to an alley in the 5400 block of West Gladys Avenue and found the headless dog, police News Affairs Sgt. Antoinette Ursitti said.

The 16-year-old boy allegedly admitted chopping the dog's head off and trying to pull a tooth from the dog's head after he allegedly had the animal in a dogfight, according to a police report.

The boy said he left the dog in the alley, according to the report.

The teen, a Chicago resident, was charged with one felony count of aggravated cruelty to an animal and one felony count of animal torture, a release from police News Affairs said. He is being charged as a juvenile.

While police were conducting a follow-up investigation it led to the animal's owner, Derrick Hargrett, 24, of the 5400 block of West Van Buren, police said.

Hargrett was charged in a warrant with three counts of misdemeanor cruelty to animals and three misdemeanor counts of animal owner duties (first violation).

At Hargrett's home, police found four dogs that showed signs of abuse, according to court records. A brown mixed dog had burned fur and skin on its rear torso. A black dog appeared malnourished, with its ribs exposed. Two pit bull mixed breeds were without food or water.

The stairs leading to the basement where the dogs were apparently kept were covered with feces and urine, court records said.

In a court appearance Saturday, Hargrett was ordered held in lieu of $10,000 bail. He was also held on an outstanding Kane County warrant for a 2009 theft conviction. His brother was being held at the Cook County juvenile detention center.

Grand Central Area detectives are investigating.
