County: Charlotte

Disposition: Alleged

Alleged: Guy George Oatman

On Wednesday, several dead animals were removed from the trash and feces filled home of Guy Oatman. His estranged wife spoke with NBC2 and she says it all could have been prevented.

"When I opened the door it was unreal what I saw. It was like beyond my wildest nightmares," said Susan Oatman.

The filth Guy Oatman was living in is hard for his estranged wife Susan to stomach.

She didn't want to go on a camera, but says the discovery of at least five animal carcasses on Wednesday isn't typical of the man she knew.

"I do know Guy really loved animals and I don't understand what happened there," said Susan Oatman.

Susan says she moved out three years ago, but asked police for help a couple of weeks ago.

"They had an attitude like leave him alone. I guess they left him alone too because it looks like nobody cared," said Susan.

Susan says conditions inside the house began to deteriorate after Hurricane Charley in 2004 when all the inside renovations were not complete.

While Susan says she believes his health issues may have lead to the mess inside the home, Guy has been in trouble with the law for animal cruelty before.

In 1990 he paid a $75 fine for leaving a cat to die in a trap, according to court papers.

Just a couple of weeks ago, he allegedly dropped off a litter of kittens and a cat at a local animal shelter. They are now hospitalized.

Susan says all the issues may have been too much, which is why investigators believe he has left Southwest Florida.

"He probably needs some medical care. I hope he is not with U-Haul trailer parked somewhere in the woods in some roach infested motel," said Susan.

While Susan hopes her husband gets the care she believes he needs, she says there is one simple lesson.

"You can only have as many pets as you can take care of," said Susan.
