Case Updates: 1 update(s) available

A Montrose area man allegedly slit the throat of a Susquehanna County family's Labrador Retriever Friday and stabbed the dog multiple times in front of a 6-year-old boy during a dispute over money he said the family owed him.

According to a police affidavit, Daniel Nash, 27, telephoned the victims' residence more than 20 times, on Wednesday and Thursday, demanding money and threatening to come to their home if they did not pay him.

Police said Mr. Nash's claims that victims Joshua Rosenkrans and Ramilynn Thompson, of Turnpike Street, Bridgewater Twp., owe him money are unfounded.

Mr. Nash drove to the residence on Friday, police said, where the boy was playing with the 3-year-old dog on the front porch.

Ms. Thompson heard Mr. Nash's vehicle stop and, according to the affidavit, saw the man exit the vehicle wearing a bandana over his face and carrying a knife in his hand.

She pulled her son into the house while Jamison, the family dog, approached Mr. Nash.

According to an affidavit, Mr. Nash then attacked the dog, grabbing it by the head and slicing its throat. Police said Mr. Nash then stabbed the dog multiple times until he was chased off the property.

The dog survived the attack and was taken to a Montrose veterinary clinic. Police said Jamison pulled through the surgery.

Mr. Nash faces a felony count of criminal attempt-robbery, as well as simple assault, terroristic threats, stalking, recklessly endangering another person, criminal trespass and cruelty to animal charges.

On Thursday, Mr. Nash also was cited by Silver Lake Police for disorderly conduct after he allegedly made threatening telephone calls to a family residing in Silver Lake Twp.

He was arraigned by Magisterial District Judge Jeffrey Hollister in Montrose District Court Friday afternoon. Bail was set at $50,000 or 10 percent cash equivalent. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Monday.

Case Updates

A Montrose man admitted to attacking a Labrador retriever with a knife in August, causing 12 wounds to the animal which required more than 140 stitches to close.

Daniel Nash, 28, pleaded guilty Friday in Susquehanna County court to one count of animal cruelty, a misdemeanor which carries up to a two-year prison sentence.

As part of a plea deal, Nash has also agreed to pay the dog's medical expenses.

He also pleaded no contest to one count of simple assault, which carries a penalty of up to five years of incarceration.

Susquehanna County District Attorney Jason Legg told the court that the dog, "Jamison," and a 6-year-old boy were in the yard at the Joshua Rosenkrans residence when Nash arrived at the home.

Legg said Nash brought the knife with him that was used to slash and attack the family's pet.

After the attack, the 3-year-old dog received emergency surgery at the Montrose Veterinary Clinic before being released to recover at home.

Nash is scheduled to be sentenced Jan. 19.
