Over 20 dogs seized along with 800 pot plants

Sheriff Gregory A. Neal, of Powhatan County states on Friday, August 12, 2011, Powhatan County Animal Control received a call of possible animal cruelty. A Deputy Sheriff assigned to Animal Control responded to an address in the 2400 block of Academy Road in reference to this complaint. While at this residence, this deputy noted several marijuana plants. At that time, he notified the Investigations Division of Powhatan Sheriff's Office and Sheriff Neal stated that a search warrant was obtained.

Over 800 marijuana plants were seized in various stages of growth (from potted plant size to approximately 5 to 6 ') from the exterior of the property. Also, excess of one pound of marijuana and paraphernalia indicative of distribution, was seized from the interior of the residence. Randy Odum, a white male 53 years of age, was arrested on one charge of Possession with Intent to Distribute Marijuana and one charge of Manufacture of Marijuana.

Odum is being held on a $5,000 bond and will be arraigned on Monday, August 15, 2011 in Powhatan County General District Court. More than 20 dogs, the majority of which were Yorkshire Terriers, were also seized and placed in protective custody pending further investigation by Powhatan Animal Control Officers.
