Small dog left in hot car
Sugar Land, TX (US)

Incident Date: Saturday, Jun 18, 2011
County: Fort Bend

Disposition: Alleged

Alleged: Roxanne Deanna Zamora

One woman learned not to leave her dog inside a hot car without water when officers in Sugar Land placed her in handcuffs and read her rights to her.

Police arrived before noon June 18 to the parking lot of Whole Foods Market on the Southwest Freeway frontage road in response to a report of a small dog left inside a car for more than an hour. The windows of the car were left slightly open and there was no water for the dog to drink.

Officers determined the outdoor temperature was 96 degrees while the inside of the car was measured at more than 120 degrees. They contacted animal services to remove the dog from the car.

The animal services crew determined the dog was "breathing heavy, lethargic and unresponsive to verbal commands," according to a statement released Thursday by the Sugar Land Police Department. The dog was taken to a 24-hour veterinary clinic.

When the owner of the car, Roxanne Deanna Zamora, 26, returned to the vehicle, officers arrested her and charged her with cruelty to animals.
