A Sarasota man faces charges of cruelty to and abandonment of animals regarding several pets in his care.

Marc Peter Birkner, 45, has been charged with animal cruelty, Sarasota County sheriff's deputies say.

After an investigation that included North Port Police and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, sheriff's deputies arrested Marc Peter Birkner, 45, this week at his home in the 3200 block of Austin Circle in Sarasota.

According to a report, inside the house authorities found two dead snakes, four decomposing rodents, two emaciated cats (one of which had an eye infection) and a dog infested with fleas. They said no water or food was provided and that feces and urine were on the floor.
