A Jones County man is facing 23 charges after authorities seized 31 dogs in a suspected dog fighting operation.

Brian Tucker was arrested Thursday night after the raid on Highway 17 in Pollocksville.

Tucker has been charged with 11 counts of restraining dogs in a cruel manner and 12 counts of cruelty to animals. Deputies say more charges are pending against the man.

Lawmen found a large amount of suspected dog fighting paraphernalia and many of the dogs had scars and fresh wounds consistent with dog fighting.

The 11 rescued adult dogs and 20 puppies were transported to an undisclosed location.

Tucker was released after posting an $11,500 secured bond and has a August 12th court date.

Lawmen say they seized 31 dogs in Jones County believed to be involved in a dog fighting operation following a similar bust earlier in the day in Pamlico County.

The Jones County Sheriff's Office says the Pit Bulls are being seized from 8080 Highway 17 in Pollocksville.

Brian Devon Tucker was arrested at the Jones County property and charged with animal cruelty and dog-fighting. Law enforcement found a large amount of suspected dog-fighting paraphernalia and many of the dogs had scars and fresh wounds consistent with dog-fighting.

The 11 rescued adult dogs and 20 rescued puppies from Jones County will be transported to the same undisclosed location as those in the Pamlico case.

"We are thrilled our combined efforts in Pamlico and Jones Counties resulted in the rescue of nearly 50 dogs," said Janette Reever, deputy manager of animal fighting investigations for The HSUS. "We are proud to assist the dedicated law enforcement officials in this community crack down on dog-fighting."

Earlier Thursday 17 dogs were rescued from a property in Pamlico County suspected of being involved in a dog fighting operation. Authorities say a tip following that bust led them to Jones County.


Case Updates

A man charged with five felonies and nearly two dozen misdemeanors related to an alleged dog fighting operation had his first appearance in Jones County Court Friday morning.

Brian Tucker, 25, of U.S. 17 north of Pollocksville, was arrested on Aug. 5 on 23 misdemeanor animal cruelty charges and accrued five additional felony dog-fighting charges four days later.

The dog fighting charges are a Class H Felony.

Shivon Cannon of the county's Clerk of Court office said Judge Louis Foy Jr. gave Tucker a court-appointed attorney Friday morning. Bryon Smith of Onslow County will represent Tucker on Oct. 28, his next scheduled court date.

Tucker posted an $11,500 bond after the initial charges, but is currently being held in Jones County Jail under a $25,000 bond �" added after he was charged with the felony counts.

According the Humane Society the five felonious counts dog fighting charges could net Tucker up to 50 months in jail.
