Four puppies that apparently had been used for target practice are recovering and need homes, the woman who rescued them said.
Tiffany Blake, 20, said she found six puppies a few feet off a road in northwest Mobile County on Nov. 23.
One of the dogs had been killed by gunshots, and five were alive but riddled with bullet holes. Blake said a second puppy died a few days later at Lucedale, Miss., veterinarian Karl Smith's office.
Smith, who treated the dogs at cost, said Tuesday he believes that someone dumped the animals alongside the dirt road, and someone else came along and shot them with a .22-caliber gun.
Smith said the surviving puppies are doing well and should fully recover soon. They are being treated with antibiotics.
"Dogs are tough, they are a lot tougher than people," Smith said.
Blake said she can't afford to keep the puppies and hopes to find homes for them.
PETA is offering a $2,500 reward for the arrest and conviction of the person. If you have information on this case, please contact: Mobile Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals 633-3531
