County: El Paso

Alleged: Amanda Gilpin

After KFOX 14 uncovers a case of animal cruelty, one shelter said there is no excuse, when at anytime a dog can be turned over to a shelter.

"Love is not enough. It's great to start," said Loretta Hyde of the Animal Rescue League of El Paso. "If your going to make that commitment to that animal, at least follow up and do your homework. You have to make sure that you are financially able to be responsible."

Lack of finances is how one German shepherd, Fluffy, ended up euthanized and his owner Amanda Gilpin behind bars charged with cruelty to animals. KFOX 14 first introduced you to Gilpin on Wednesday. Her dog Fluffy was neglected. Part of his skin was coming off. Gilpin said she couldn't afford treatment.

"I know he's suffering, and I know its best, but that's my puppy," said Gilpin.

"That dog suffered a long time. It took along time for him to get into that kind of a situation, so don't wait. At least try to find someone that is willing to help," said Hyde.

That is what the family of one Chihuahua did. He didn't mind putting on a show for KFOX 14, but on his back is a burn caused by a chemical spill. His family gave him to the Animal Rescue League.

"They had already exhausted all of their means as far as financial to take care of him, but they wanted the best for him," said Hyde.

He is now in the recovery process along with another dog. That one was covered by ticks and abandoned.

"If you love that animal, do the right thing," said Hyde. "A lot of times I take the dog and I don't return it," said Hyde.

Hyde sometimes saying goodbye is easier than watching a dog suffer.

"If worst comes to worst, take them to animal control. They don't charge to put the animals to sleep," she said. "A lot of times, we're the selfish one 'l love him so much I can't do that.' No. If they have no quality of life, that's not love."

Hyde said there are things the community can to save animals lives.

"Seventy percent of the animals in El Paso are not vaccinated. Get them vaccinated. There's shot clinics. There's no excuse. You can go to Walmart and buy parvo, distemper," she said.

Hyde also said it is important to spay and neuter pets.

Hyde said she understands dogs are expensive. The
