Puppy thrown to floor
Riverside, CA (US)

Incident Date: Friday, Jul 1, 2011
County: Riverside

Disposition: Alleged
Case Images: 2 files available

Alleged: David Hendershot

A Riverside county man could face charges for seriously injuring his puppy in an act that was caught on tape.

The alleged animal cruelty happened July 6 at a water company office where video cameras recorded the man's actions

In the video you can see 67-year-old David Hendershot at the counter of the Water District office in Nuevo with his grandson, who's holding the 3-month old chihuahua, according to John Welsh of the Department of Animal Services.

Hendershot appears to get angry about something and hits the child.

The dog runs away and when the clerk hands the puppy back to Hendershot, he throws the dog to the ground. The dog appears to try and hobble away.

"The puppy could be seen in apparent pain, and unable to stand completely," said Officer Abel Buenrostro of the Department of Animal Services.

The puppy has a broken leg and torn ligaments.

Mr. Hendershot has not been arrested. A deputy district attorney is reviewing the officer's report.

If charges are filed, Mr. Hendershot will receive a letter mandating a court appearance.

After he was contacted by Animal Services, Mr. Hendershot signed over the dog.

"The dog was transferred to the Mary S. Roberts Pet Adoption Center and is currently being fostered by a Riverside woman who volunteers for the nonprofit animal shelter," added Welsh.
