Suspect(s) Unknown - We need your help!

A 6-week-old puppy found this morning in a Holiday canal is "doing better," say officials at clinging to a palm frond. He was suffering from hypothermia. He was also missing one ear and the other had been partially severed, said John Malley, interim director of animal services.

"He has to undergo surgery for his right ear," Malley said. "It's going to have to be sutured. His condition now is stable."

When Wilson will undergo surgery is not clear. Malley said it's up to the doctor to determine when he is healthy enough to handle the procedure.

"We think he'll recover," Malley said.

Cases like Wilson's are not unheard of.

"Essentially what people do is they try to crop ears on their own," Malley said. "It's a surgical procedure, and it's not something people should do in their backyard. They botched the procedure and simply threw the dog away hoping it would die."

Wilson was recovered and brought to Animal Service's Land O' Lakes facility thanks to a tip animal control officers received. When officers arrived at the canal on Flora Avenue and Basswood Drive in Holiday, they found the black-and-white puppy.

Animal control officers are seeking information about what happened to Wilson and who might be responsible for his condition.

"This is the type of case we would request for the state attorney's office to pursue criminal charges," Malley said.

Anyone with information about what happened to Wilson may call 727-834-3216.

Pasco County residents who wish to help Wilson can make donations to the shelter. For information, call 813-929-1212 or stop by the shelter at 19640 Dogpatch Lane.

Malley anticipates Wilson will eventually be made available for adoption either through animal services or one of the agency's rescue partners.
