Maintenance workers entered the 3rd floor Metro Place Apartment of Meghan Powers to find two great danes in cages.  The dogs were emaciated and left to starve amidst empty bags of food and animal waste.

The dogs, both on IV therapy, are being nursed back to health at the Orange County Animal Services.

Merlyn's Magic, a 2 year old weighed in at a mere 68 pounds.  He is about half the weight a Great Dane should be and he has bedsores all over his body.  He also has ulcers in his mouth.

The sister, Margical Princess, isn't as skinny but is also suffering from malnutrition.

The two dogs, were barely able to walk but showed their true spirit in wanting to play with their rescuers, when they were taken away.

In a 4 day period after being rescued the dogs gained 14 pounds.  A lot of the weight gain came from just being able to drink water.

The dogs are playing now in a pen built especially for them.  Many donations have been sent to the Orange County Animal Control for the dogs, including a bed made with an Egyptian cotton cover.

Over 100 offers have come in to adopt the dogs but they are not yet available until the case is resolved.  Animal Control is in the process of petitioning the court to take ownership of the dogs.  The ACO promises to keep the two dogs together and will use a Great Dane Rescue to assist in the adoptions.

As of 11/14/03 the State Attorney's office was waiting to get the animal neglect case paperwork.  Powers has not yet been formally charged wtih animal neglect which is a misdeameanor charge in Florida.

Ironically, Powers once volunteered for an animal rescue group and worked in a kennel.
