Seagull bludgeoned to death with rock
Montauk, NY (US)

Incident Date: Saturday, Jul 23, 2011
County: Suffolk

Disposition: Open

Suspect(s) Unknown - We need your help!

It was the third act of cruelty to a wild animal reported in Suffolk County in July, all of them on the East End.

A seagull was lured with bread then bludgeoned to death with a rock in Montauk in the early hours of Saturday, July 23, and now the Montauk County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is offering a $1,000 reward for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person responsible.

A patron at the Royal Atlantic Hotel lured seagulls with bread, then threw rocks at them sometime between 2 and 4 a.m. that morning, the SPCA said in a press release. One brick-sized rock struck one of the birds, causing it to vomit blood and bread. It eventually died.

A woman in a red bathing suit took photographs of the incident, according to the SPCA. The organization is looking for her, or anyone else with information about the act, to come forward.

People with information about the incident can call the SPCA at 382-7722. All calls will be confidential.
