Cat found bound, dead in garbage bin
Toronto, ON (CA)

Incident Date: Sunday, Jul 24, 2011

Disposition: Open

Suspect(s) Unknown - We need your help!

Animal cruelty investigators are looking into the death of a cat found bound by its limbs and covered in an unknown purple substance in a Smthye Park garbage bin over the weekend.

The Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (OSPCA), the Etobicoke Humane Society and Toronto police have all joined in on the investigation, which was sparked Sunday afternoon by the discovery of the unidentified adult cat, found dead wrapped in a pillow case and a cloth bag.

"The cat has been sent to the University of Guelph for necropsy, which is like an animal autopsy, to get more information as to how it died and the details on its death," OSPCA spokesperson Alison Cross said of the status of the investigation. "At this point, it is looking suspicious, which is why we have (a police detective) involved in the case - because it was bound and in a pillow case and cloth bag and left in a garbage can."

Investigators are now appealing to the public for any tips they may have on the cat, Cross added.

"Any information people may be able to share that may be linked to this cat's death would be helpful," she said. "The cat had a purple substance on it, so have you seen a purple substance in your area lately? Do you know anyone who's been talking about or may have information about this cat's death?"

Anyone with information is asked to call the OSPCA at 1-888-668-7722, Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477), or Det. Falconer of 12 Division at 416-808-1200.
