A woman charged with six misdemeanor counts of animal abuse pleaded innocent to the charges Monday (Nov 17, 2003) in Fairfield County Municipal Court.
Joyce Carper, 60, of 6685 Tent Church Road, requested a jury trial in the case. In the meantime, Judge James Luse ordered she have no contact with animals or with the Fairfield Area Humane Society. She was released after posting $100, which is 10 percent of her $1,000 bond.
A private complaint alerted Humane Society officials to the abuse with which Carper is accused. Charges were filed with the prosecutor's office Oct. 24.
The Humane Society took three horses, a pony, a puppy and a goat into custody. The animals had numerous health problems, including malnourishment, according to reports. A fourth horse was found dead at her home Case UpdatesUnder a plea agreement reached in February, Carper pleaded no contest to the disorderly conduct charge and the other animal cruelty charges were dismissed.
Carper was sentenced to a suspended 30 days in jail and a suspended fine of $250.
Fairfield County Municipal Court Judge Patrick Harris placed Carper on probation and ordered her not to own livestock or dogs. She also was ordered to pay $1,000 in restitution to the Humane Society. Her dog, horses and goat were forfeited.
The animals were placed in foster families that have continued to rehabilitate them.
