2 dogs surrendered, underweight and malnourished
Memphis, TN (US)

Incident Date: Saturday, Jul 9, 2011
County: Shelby

Disposition: Alleged

Alleged: Jermaine Coleman

Police cited Jermaine Coleman for neglecting his two dogs on Saturday, something he didn't deny.

"It kind of hurts me because I didn't do what I was supposed to do as a dog owner," said Coleman. He added that times are tough for him. Coleman said he wished whoever called the police would have come to him first.

"You at least could have come and asked or you at least could have come and said 'we need to do something about this before it gets too late'," said Coleman.

Police say his dogs were underweight and malnourished. The only shelter was a small tree, but police say there was no food. Coleman said he did the best he could to keep his two dogs hydrated and fed.

"Most dogs do turn over their own water," said Coleman. "They do turn over their own food, and then other dogs in the neighborhood comes along and eat up their food." He said he willingly gave his dogs to animal control. He added that it was a tough lesson to learn.

"Pray to the good lord that they have a good home and somebody else can take care of them better than I can," said Coleman.

Coleman was also cited by animal control for not having dog licenses and failing to vaccinate, as well as, spay and neuter.
