A 28-year-old woman was charged with cruelty to animals on Tuesday after police found 36 dogs in her Center Street apartment, police said. She was taken to the hospital for an evaluation.

Jessica Yazmer of 14 Center St. was charged after a neighbor called police and said they heard a dog fight in the house.

Animal control officer Beverly LaPlume said Yazmer pulled up with four dogs in her car after LaPlume arrived at the house. Yazmer told LaPlume there were 10 dogs inside.

"When I walked in I saw at least 12 dogs, I heard two more in the back," LaPlume said.

LaPlume found three cages in the basement with five or six puppies in each cage and feces one or two inches thick, she said.

"None of these dogs had food or water," she said.

LaPlume brought the dogs, which include beagles, Australian shepherds, pit bulls and a golden retriever, to Cherry Brook Kennels and Roaring Brook Kennels, both in Canton.

LaPlume said the situation was the worst one she's seen as an animal control officer.

"The heath department is going to have to get in there. There were feces all over the floor, window screens ripped out, black flies and other bugs," she said.

The four cats found in the apartment are available, however, and inquiries can be made to LaPlume at 860-409-4205.

"They're all friendly dogs; they're used to being with other dogs." LaPlume said.

"I'd love to see people in the community step up and adopt some of these dogs," said Police Chief Christopher Arciero.

According to
Yazmer's Facebook page, she studied animal sciences at UConn. Neighbors said Yazmer rescued the animals and was nursing them back to health before placing them in caring homes.

Yazmer is scheduled to appear at Hartford Community Court on July 20.

Case Updates

Jessica Yazmer, a Canton woman who was accused of animal cruelty after an incident that caused a public outcry in July, was ordered to perform 20 hours of community service Wednesday in Hartford Community Court.

Yazmer, 28, was not required to enter a plea or pay a fine under the community court process, according to a court official. She was scheduled to return Dec. 8 to show proof of community service. The manner of service was not specified by the court.

On July 5, police said 40 mistreated dogs and a few cats were discovered in Yazmer's apartment on Center Street after a report of a dog fight.

Yazmer was listed on a pet adoption website as a representative for a Collinsville-based organization that rescued dogs from high-kill shelters in the South.

The dogs, including nearly 20 puppies, were discovered in life-threatening conditions, animal control officer Beverly LaPlume said. All survived and many were treated for worms and other conditions. Canton building officials ruled the apartment unfit for human occupancy on July 7.

Yazmer's court appearance was postponed two times. In a court affidavit filed July 18, attorney Jon L. Schoenhorn said Yazmer, a 2001 Simsbury High graduate, was receiving treatment for an undisclosed medical condition.

Cherry Brook Kennels and Roaring Brook Kennels in Canton initially cared for the dogs and Roaring Brook, which provided care free of charge, handled some puppy adoptions but was soon was overwhelmed with requests.

Subsequently, the Simon Foundation in Bloomfield was handling all adoptions.
