An Iowa woman faces animal cruelty charges after two pit bull dogs were found dead in her locked car while she was shopping in a Joliet furniture store, police said.

The car, a 2005 Nissan Maxima, was locked with the windows rolled up as the woman was shopping for about two hours at the Value City Furniture Store at 3355 Mall Loop Drive, Joliet police said.

Maya B. Webb, 27, of Bettendorf Iowa, was charged with aggravated cruelty to animals, a Class 4 felony, police said.

She was housed at the Will County Adult Detention facility where she was released today, according to the Will County sheriff's office Web site.

Officers were called to the parking lot about 3:50 p.m. where they saw Webb crying outside of her car.

They then found that the dogs, a black pit bull and a brown pit bull, had died in the woman's car, police said. The body of the black dog was on the driver's side floor and the brown animal was on the rear passenger floor, police said.

Webb told police that the dogs were in the car with the engine running and the air conditioning activated but when police arrived the car was not running, police said.

The weather was 81 degrees and sunny at the time the dogs were found.

Sales records indicated that Webb was in the store for about 2 hours from 1:45 p.m. until 3:45 p.m., police said.

Investigators plan to review surveillance video of the parking lot to determine how long the car was parked, police said.
