Two dogs poisoned with toxic pesticide
Chino Valley, AZ (US)

Incident Date: Friday, Oct 3, 2003
County: Yavapai

Charges: Felony CTA
Disposition: Alleged

Alleged: Arnold Juan, Jr

The Yavapai County Sheriff's Office has arrested a man in connection with a pair of dog poisonings.

On Oct. 3, YCSO Animal Control officers were called to a Chino Valley home where two dogs were found dead in or near their yard. One of the dogs was tied to a tree.

The Animal Control officers on the scene discovered a suspicious substance in the dogs' food bowl. Tests revealed that substance to be Aldicarb, a highly toxic pesticide. Because Aldicarb is a restricted-use pesticide in the United States, it available only to certified applicators.

Lab tests showed that the dogs had ingested the poison.

Further investigation prompted the YSCO Special Crimes Unit to take a closer look at Arnold Juan Jr., a ranch hand on the property where the dogs were found. Juan allowed investigators to search his truck. They discovered particles of Aldicarb on the floorboards.

Investigators on Monday obtained a search warrant for Juan's home. According to the YSCO, Juan had admitted to poisoning the dogs and had told investigators he would show them where the poison was. He led deputies to a home across the road and a trailer containing about a pound of the pesticide.

Deputies took Juan into custody. He now faces two felony counts of cruelty to animals.
