Memphis police on Sunday charged a woman in the Raleigh-Frayser area with the felony of aggravated animal cruelty after animal control officers found a malnourished, injured pit bull chained to a pole in her backyard, according to a court affidavit.

After her arrest, Debra F. West, who had ages of 31 and 38 listed in jail and court records, was held in Shelby County's Jail East on $3,500 bond.

Someone concerned about the brown, male pit bull called police to the home in the 3600 block of Dorado, near Frayser-Raleigh and New Allen roads.

The dog had a deep, fly-infested wound around its neck from a rusty metal chain that held it to a pole, according to the court document. It was severely malnourished and had no water available. A veterinarian determined that the dog would have to be euthanized.
