Alleged: Jeanine Ann Cook

More than 100 animals were found in poor condition or without food or water Wednesday afternoon at an unpermitted animal sanctuary in northwest Arizona, officials said.

Jeanine Ann Cook, 60, of Golden Valley, operated an unpermitted no-kill sanctuary called "Pleasant Farms," Trish Carter with the Mohave County Sheriff's Office said.

The discovery was made after Mohave County Sheriff's Office received a complaint on Wednesday about livestock and pets left without water and a horse being down, according to the report.

Cook surrendered most of her animals, including about 110 goats, a pot belly pig, an emu and four dogs, to the Arizona Department of Livestock and Animal Control, Carter said.

Cook was arrested and faces reckless cruel animal mistreatment charges along with 60 counts of herd sheep on land without consent, Carter said.

Carter said animals were observed dead on the scene and a horse and goat had to be euthanized after a local veterinarian's inspection.

A baby goat also passed away at the temporary holding facility where the animals were kept before being transported to state facilities, Carter said.

She said animals diagnosed as too infirm or aged to travel were placed with local rescues.

Cook may face further cruelty charges, depending on results of on-going investigation, Carter said.
