A 3-month-old puppy, injured June 12 when it was smashed onto pavement, is recovering from orthopedic surgery at the Urbana Veterinary Clinic.

The clinic reported no complications occurred during the procedure late Wednesday morning.

Two surgical pins were inserted into the pup's right hind leg to straighten the femur, which had been shattered at the growth plate. Doctors say the dog should be spared long-term arthritis and growth defects. The dog was neutered as well.

Weighing just 14 pounds, the brown-spotted pup is suffering from a broken leg, two broken ribs, a lung contusion and abrasions to his eye and nose.

An employee of the clinic said the dog was resting and "doing well" after surgery on Wednesday.

The Urbana clinic received five applications for adoption as of Wednesday afternoon and hopes to make a decision by the end of the week. Approximately $4,000 had been donated to the clinic last Friday to cover costs of surgery and general care.

Timothy Combs, 51, of 404 Laurel Oak St., Urbana, was charged by Urbana police with cruelty to animals on June 12.

"(Combs) was observed by a witness picking up the dog by the throat and throwing him from the front porch of (his) address onto the street," Interim Police Chief Matt Lingrell told the Daily Citizen last week, citing reports.

Champaign County Municipal Court Judge Susan J. Fornof-Lippencott granted Combs' request for a continuance Monday morning. He did not enter a plea and was released on his own recognizance, according to court documents.

The arraignment is scheduled to resume July 7 at 9 a.m.

A public records search on Combs, via the county's municipal court website, shows an extensive criminal record dating to 1994. Charges include domestic violence, disorderly conduct, menacing, resisting arrest, drug possession, endangering children, intimidating a witness, sexual imposition and driving under the influence.

Trent Chess saw the disturbance and carried the pup to safety. He was driving on Laurel Oak Street when the pup was thrown into his path, said his wife, Faith, who said she saw the incident from the vehicle along with her sons and nieces. Chess was able to avoid hitting the pup, then carried it to safety before calling police, she added.

Texanna Packer, Combs' neighbor, took the injured puppy to her residence while police arrived on the scene.

Packer stayed with the dog and followed police to the clinic to keep it company.

Case Updates

A man charged with severely injuring a 3-month-old puppy was found guilty of the offense this week in Champaign County Municipal Court. He answered to a single count of animal cruelty, a first-degree misdemeanor.

The ruling was made Tuesday by Judge Susan J. Fornof-Lippencott during a scheduled pre-trial hearing with the defendant and his attorney, Doug Riddell.

Timothy Combs, 51, of 404 Laurel Oak St., Urbana, was ordered to make restitution of $2,171.33 to the Urbana Veterinary Clinic to cover the puppy's medical bills. He was ordered to pay a $75 fine plus court costs. He is prohibited from having animals for the next five years, according to the municipal court staff.

A 180-day jail term was suspended.

An Urbana man pleaded not guilty Thursday to a charge that he severely injured a small dog last month.

According to information from Champaign County Municipal Court, Timothy A. Combs, 51, of 404 Laurel Oak St., Urbana, pleaded not guilty to a single count of cruelty to animals. He is scheduled to face a pre-trial hearing on July 19.

A report from the Urbana Police Division showed on June 12, Combs was accused of grabbing the three-month-old animal by its throat and throwing it onto the street.

Douglas Riddell, a Columbus attorney, was selected to represent Combs in court.

The dog, a small mixed breed named Morgan, was taken to the Urbana Veterinary Clinic, where surgical pins were implanted to straighten and repair the dog's broken leg.

Joey Roberts, an employee at the clinic, said the dog suffered other injuries as well, but has since made a good recovery. Roberts said the dog looked healthy on a checkup earlier this week. The clinic accepted donations to pay for the medical procedures, and will use additonal donations to help cover the costs of other cases of abused and neglected animals.

Albert Mayer, who eventually adopted the dog, said Morgan is doing well.

"I can't understand why anybody would to that to a dog or any creature," Mayer said.

He added the dog is the first he's owned that enjoys trips to the veterinarian.

"He's the only dog we've ever had who enjoys going to the vet because they were so good with him," Mayer said.
