Sauget, Illinois, police plan to seek animal abuse charges against a dog owner who left her dog in a fenced in pen for nearly two years.

The owner told police she fed the dog and left water in the pen, but the pit bull mix appeared to be malnourished, was covered in sores and might not survive.

"The mange itself is bad. The infection is bad. But he also has heartworm disease," said Dr. Thorin Lindstrom, with the Daniel Randall Medical Clinic.

Hope Rescuers is now taking care of the dog and has named in Aaron. Hope Rescuers is looking for donations to help with his survival. Go to www.hoperescues.com to help.

They took the dog to Dr. Thorin Lindstrom at the Daniel Randall Veterinary Clinic in Godfrey. "We are giving him antibiotics to treat the skin infections," said Dr. Lindstrom.

He said the dog suffered from so many different ailments he might not survive.

Police say the dog had never been given a bath and was never taken to a vet.

"The owner indicated that she had lost her job and she just could not care for the dog any longer," said Chief Patrick Delaney, Sauget Police Department. "Our question was why didn't you just tell somebody?"

Detective Sgt. Vito Parisi found the dog and showed us a tarp that covered part of the fenced-in pen. It appeared the tarp was placed in such a way to keep anyone from seeing how bad the dog's condition was.

"Open sores, oozing blisters and just a very sad and disturbing situation," said Chief Delaney. His department will seek charges against the dog's owner this week.

The dog was rescued on Memorial Day weekend and was given the name Aaron for a special reason. "One of our friends lost her brother on his 30th birthday in Afghanistan," said Spiker. "His name was Aaron Grider, so we wanted to give this dog a name that reflected honor and bravery."

Case Updates

A dog, allegedly neglected by his owner and suffering from mange in Sauget, was rescued by a local animal group and is getting a second chance on life.

Ashley M. Briggs, 23, was charged Thursday with two misdemeanors in connection with the case, cruelty to animals and a violation of animal owner duties, according to St. Clair County Circuit Clerk records.

No one at the Sauget Police Department could be reached for comment Saturday. Briggs couldn't be reached for comment.

The pit bull mix has been named Aaron by the group Hope Rescues, a nonprofit dog rescue group where Aaron now resides.

Aaron appeared malnourished, had lost most of his fur and suffered from bleeding sores. Local police discovered the dog inside a pen covered with tarps and gave him to Hope Rescues. The dog likely suffered from the disease for several months, according to the Hope Rescues website.

Rescuers bathed Aaron, gave him a flea treatment, which kills most forms of mange, gave him food and water and provided a comfortable place for him to sleep.

The dog was rescued during Memorial Day weekend. He was named Aaron, after Sgt. 1st Class Ronald A. "Aaron" Grider, a Brighton man who was killed in September after being hit by machine gun fire during combat in Afghanistan.
